    The scrapbook of his grandson John Blackburn Moyers says that he
    "was of German extraction, read that language fluently, and was fond of books. He emigrated from Culpepper Co., Virginia when my father was about 21, to Jefferson Co., Tenn, and settled on Long Creek. where he built one of the first grist mills of the county. He planted a fine orchard. And the Milbeur apple tree and the August pear of superior flavour was brought from Virginia and flourished in his orchard from which Tennessee has been richly supplied; this was about the year 1790.
    He was an industrious farmer, an upright and honest citizen but never professed religion."

    "Grandfather lived to be about 75 and grandmother about 99 years. They both lie buried side by side in their orchard."


    According to an unknown source:
    In the Eighth Virginia Regiment, known as "The German Regiment of the Virginia Line" he served under Capt. Darke and Col. Abraham Bowman. Col. Bowman fought at Ticonderoga, Monmouth, Germantown and Valley Forge. He commanded the regiment at Brandywine and Yorktown.
    John Nevill also was a Colonel of the Eighth Virginia Regiment beginning December 11, 1777. On September 14, 1778 he and many men of the Eighth were transfered to the Fourth Virginia Regiment. The Fourth Virginia fought at the Battle of Princeton, Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Battle of Monmouth and the siege of Charleston where most were taken prisoner.

    His will is dated 7 Feb 1815.. FindAGrave says he died on 9 Feb, but I'm not ready to accept that date.

    FindAGrave says that her maiden name was McGowan, but on familysearch.org, the owner of the FindAPage page admits that he just has a vague memory that he heard the name McGowan once upon a time. So I'm not willing to buy it.

Its passengers included 53-year-old John Paul Vogt (a burgher, - a privileged town-dweller) his wife Mara (46), and children Caterona Margaret (18), Maria (16), Andreas (12), and Casper (8).
