According to his unsourced FindAGrave bio, he was a sea captain, and the first record of him in North Carolina was in 1700 when he was appointed as a Clerk of the Court of Pamplica in Bath County by the Deputy Governor of Carolina, Colonel Carey. He was captured in Virginia and shipped in chains to England, but the case was dropped for lack of evidence after a year, and he return to North Carolina, settling on the bank of River Neuse, near New Bern (which is at an ocean inlet at the mouth of the river).
He was rumored to be the original owner of the sloop "Adventure", which was captured by the British when after Carey's Rebellion, and then captured by Black Beard.
