Dr. Walker was born on January 12, 1921, in Sparta, Tennessee. His father and mother were both teachers: W. A. Walker, Sr. and Bessie Nell Lee Walker. Growing up with Dr. Walker in the small middle Tennessee town of Sparta were his two brothers and two sisters: William Thomas Walker, Lloyd Daniel Walker, Martha Johnson Walker Pharris and Betsy Lee Walker Butler Swindell
During World War II, Dr. Walker served as a civilian employee of the U. S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from 1942-1943. He then served in the U. S. Army, inducted in December 1943 and honorable discharged in April 1946. He trained as a military and educational instructor at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and later at Camp Siebert, Alabama. While in the Army, he was assigned to an engineering heavy-shop company at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, for field training.
Later, he was sent on extended detachment to Washington and Lee University to prepare for assignment to the U. S. Armed Forces Institute at the Army General Hospital at Ft. Carson, Colorado, where he served the remainder of the war as an instructor and educational counselor in the hospital’s program for the rehabilitation of battle-wounded and disabled personnel. During his army career, he served in all ranks from private to technician 4th grade.
After his military service, Dr. Walker returned to an academic career, receiving his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Tech, his master’s from George Peabody College and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas. During this same time, he taught history at Peabody, the University of Texas and East Central Mississippi Junior College.
In 1955, Dr. Walker came to Monroe as a professor in the history department of Northeast Louisiana State College (today, the University of Louisiana at Monroe). During a 31-year career, he served as professor and department chair, retiring in 1986 as professor emeritus of history.
