SOURCES -  JOHN M. DEATHERAGE

- John M. had a history of getting engaged and not getting married. First: 9 Aug 1851 License to marry Vesta Ann Clewer (Clowers), surety, Henry Martin. Note with license " This license was returned without being celebrated by John M. Deatherage through his brother Allen Deatherage 14 Aug 51". (Roane Co, TN MB 2, #42, 201-202, bond and license). This John M., the brother of Allen, would have to be the son of Abner and Elizabeth. Vesta Clowers later married Lindsey Mathis on 13 Jun 1859, F. M. Gage, J.P. (Marriage Records Roane County Tennessee 1856-1880).
- Second: 14 Aug 1851 License to marry Elizabeth Clark, surety, Allen Deatherage. Note with license " Peter B. Posten reported that John M. Deatherage had lost the license and obtained another license for the same parties on 13 Dec 1851" (Roane Co, TN MB 2, #43, 203-204, bond, license missing).
- Third: 13 Dec 1851 License to marry Elizabeth Clark, surety, Peter B. Posten. No Return on marriage book (Roane Co, TN MB 2, #101, 219-220, bond, license missing). An Elizabeth Clark later married John R. Milton on 10 Oct 1854, James Sewell, M.G., license 9 Oct 1854, surety, Wm. C. Burnett (Roane Co, TN MB 2, #96, 328-329, bond and license).
- In the 1850 Roane Co, TN Census, there are 3 Elizabeth Clark's that could be the intended of John M.: (family 38) James Clark (55), child Elizabeth, aged 18. This family is very close to the household, family 52, where John M. Deatherage is living in 1850. (family 1552) Robert Clark (50), child Elizabeth W., aged 21. (family 1701) John M. Clark (55), child Elizabeth, aged 20.
- In the 1860 Roane Co, TN Census, Elizabeth (27) is still in the household of Robert Clark (family 1851-1715). I don't find the John Milton that married Elizabeth Clark or Elizabeth, the daughter of John M. Clark.
- Fourth: 26 Mar 1853 License to marry Jane McCollum, surety, John H. Jaquiss. Married 27 mar 1853 by Wm. Deatherage, J.P. (Roane Co, TN MB 2, #39, 269-270, bond and license). In the 1860 Roane Co, TN Census, Alexander (60) is living with Catherine (43), married within the year, and no children in the household (family 1315-1234). Jno. (age 29) is with Lydia J. (age 27) and Sarah (8), Margaret (6), Elizabeth (4) and Allen (1) (family 1453-1348). In the 1870 Roane Co, TN Census, Alex (71) is living with Catherine (50), and no children in the household (family 16-16, P.O. Ten Mile Stand, 9th District). No John Deatherage listed. - 1850, 1860 Roane Co., TN, federal census
- 1870 Alcorn Co., MS, federal census
- 1880 McNairy Co., TN, federal census
- Stanfill pages 137-148. She makes John a son of Alexander, that is not correct. She also assigns John a daughter Ellen Kathryn Deatherage (12 Oct 1854-30 Oct 1913), who is buried at Farmington, Mississippi, and who married Newton Voyles. Mrs. Stanfill lists the 1860 Roane Co., TN; 1870 Alcorn Co., MS; and the 1880 McNairy Co., TN, federal census enumerations as sources.
