A Straight Perspective on Gay Rights

Same Sex Marriage - The Bottom Line

Gay people should be subject to the same rules of conduct as heterosexual people.  When someone they have a relationship with (or just a crush on) rejects them or breaks their heart, they feel pain and rejection.  If they try to force themselves on someone, or act too aggressively (or sometimes, too timidly), or engage in adulterous or abusive activity, they find themselves held in contempt by the people who are personally affected by the action, or maybe they find their reputations or positions of respect are damaged.  On the other hand, if they treat people with respect, honor their commitments, and the commitments of others, give of themselves and touch lives- or maybe even if they plod awkwardly through life - then they deserve the place of greater or lesser respect and dignity based upon what they do and say.  But their sexual orientations and the consequent innocuous desires should play no part in their eligibility for membership in any organization.  And they should be allowed - no, encouraged - to give their hearts and lives in commitment to the person with whom they share the feeling and decision of love and commitment.
